An explanation of Technical Diving made easy
Diving on air has limits. When we dive on air we have to consider nitrogen narcosis and NDL (no decompression limits) when planning dives. However, unless you plan to dive deeper than 66 meters you don't have to think about oxygen toxicity when breathing air. Technical diving pushes back the no decompression limits and nitrogen narcosis limits of air.
PADI, TDI or IANTD Basic Nitrox:
To understand technical diving you need to decide that you would like to extend your diving limits. Maybe you want to do 30 minutes at 30 meters instead of having a 20-minute NDL. The PADI Basic Nitrox course shows you how to do this. We simply add a bit more oxygen to the air you are breathing, and by the process of elimination, reduce the nitrogen. Recreational use of Nitrox is restricted to mixtures containing up to 40% oxygen. Less nitrogen in the gas means you absorb less nitrogen while you are diving. By using a set of adjusted Recreational Dive Planners we can now dive longer. Maybe you'ld like to spend more time on Akitsushima to watch the barracuda, or maybe you need more time to cover all of the Kogyo on one dive or to swim through the Irako. Can do! Diving on Nitrox usually results in a 50% increase in allowable bottom time.
The PADI Nitrox Diver Specialty Course can be taken by any Open Water Diver with 10 logged dives or any Advanced Open Water Diver. The TDI Nitrox Diver course can be taken as part of the SDI Open Water Diver course to increase safety or by anyone with a diving license.
